Final year before graduation, time to get serious! Last year we worked on figuring out what career you'd like to pursue and what experience you need for it. This year it is important to build relationships with potential employers!

 
 

September

Revising and improving on Plans and Strategies - Now, you are in your final year in school and you are preparing to enter into the world of work. You must have gained a bit of experience and insight from internships, interactions with your mentor and other industry professionals. Your interests and ambitions must have changed or might be in need of a little modification. You will therefore be required to work closely with your mentor to achieve the following; 

  1. Review of personal profile as well as career and study plans developed the previous year. (This is to make room for any changes in career path and study plans.) 

  2. You can use this career plan template to work on reviewing your existing career plan and developing a revised version of the plan with your mentor.

Revising & Improving on Career Development Tools- Now that you have a revised career plan and strategy, you will need to revise your career development tools to match your new career plan. You are required  to work closely with your mentor to achieve the following.

  1. Review the career development tools you worked on creating the previous year. ( These career development tools include your LinkedIn Profile, Cover letter and Resume). 

  2.  Take two courses from Google on digital skills for Africa.

Preparing for First Semester Examinations- To excel at school, you will need to do well in your exams. You can only do well if you take time to prepare for them. While you prepare for your exams, it would be great that you discuss any problems you may face and worries you may have about your upcoming exams with your mentor.

Building Strategic Relationships - A lot of jobs never get advertised on a job site. Relationships are the most effective way to find out about jobs and get hired. You would be required to work closely with your mentor to achieve the following;

  1. Identify individuals with whom you can build professional relationships with. (Use LinkedIn, your lecturers, your mentor and other relevant connections you have to identify five individuals at five different organizations to build a relationship with).

  2. Conduct informational interviews with at least 2 of these individuals.

Acquiring a Corporate/ Digital Skill: Beyond what you learn in class, there are certain skills you need to learn in addition. Some of these skills are in high demand and you will require them to stand out in the job market. Be sure to work closely with your mentor to take two courses from Google on digital skills for Africa

Hunting for a Job: To get the internship or job of your dream, you will need to search for it. It is however not enough to just search. You need to be guided to search in the right places and to search the right way. Be sure to work closely with your mentor to;

  1. Send out applications to identified organizations seeking for internships and national service placements where applicable.

  2. Conduct informational and mock interviews.
