Years ago, getting a degree was all one needed to be successful in life. All one had to do was graduate from university, get a ready job, and stay in that job until retirement. But all that is gone with what we like to term the ‘good old days’. Now, university graduates must constantly and strategically search for job opportunities and sell themselves to several employers before landing their first job after school.

Knowing where to look for job opportunities in your field is a great start for your job search journey. It is no longer beneficial to look for jobs in only one place or with only one strategy. This is why we have combined a list of the standard places to look for job opportunities.

  • Network with People in your Field: According to Forbes, many of the best jobs never get advertised. They get filled through word of mouth from friends, former colleagues, or ex-bosses. This is why enlarging your network as a fresh graduate is one of the most important steps you need to take in your job search journey.

The larger your network, the higher your chances of hearing about opportunities first-hand, and the bigger your chance of landing a job. Networking is your best bet to always being on top of what’s happening in your industry and other industries. You always know what’s new, what’s changing, what companies are hiring, and what opportunities are available.

LinkedIn, online communities, professional associations, and events are some of the places to get your networking started and going. Your goal as a ‘professional networker’ is to connect with individuals in your field and to leverage every chance you get to meet them in person or strike up a conversation online. It might not be easy at first but simply connecting with people and asking to know about what they do and their thoughts about entering into the industry is a good way to get started.
